Bardiya on Flood Alert: Over 83,000 Residents at Risk This Monsoon

Over 83,000 people in Bardiya district may face severe flood risks this monsoon, according to a recent alert issued by the District Disaster Management Committee (DDMC). With Lumbini Province expected to witness the highest rainfall across Nepal this year, Bardiya has been identified as the most flood-vulnerable region in the province.

The district, home to major rivers like the Karnali and Babai, along with several smaller streams, has a long history of monsoon-related disasters. These water bodies are known to swell dangerously during heavy rains, posing threats to lives and property.

Surendra Paudel, Chief District Officer and coordinator of the DDMC, stated that the current projections are based on historical damage records dating back to 1983. “We have made detailed preparations for rescue operations and post-flood relief, should a disaster strike,” Paudel said.

All eight local governments in Bardiya have mobilized disaster preparedness teams, with a strong focus on community safety. Past flood events in 1983, 1994, 2001, 2014, 2017, and 2022 have claimed over 50 lives, with the 2014 flood being the most devastating — affecting over 93,000 people and killing 32. Villages like Rampur Tapu and Dhungra were completely washed away during that tragedy.

To reduce risk this year, joint mock drills involving the Nepal Army, Armed Police Force, and Nepal Police have been carried out. Early warning systems, including community sirens and evacuation teams, are now in place to ensure timely alerts for residents in flood-prone zones.

Officials emphasized that all necessary measures are being taken to guarantee a fast and efficient response should weather conditions worsen. Local authorities are also urging citizens to remain vigilant and follow evacuation protocols when necessary.
