Diplomatic-level discussions are currently underway regarding Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli’s potential visit to India, which is likely to take place in the mid of July 2025.
According to a senior official at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, preparations are being made to finalize the visit date after Asar’s third week, with both nations actively engaging in diplomatic consultations.
This would mark Oli’s first official visit to India since forming the government almost a year ago. Despite earlier talks, the visit could not materialize due to several scheduling conflicts and lack of mutual confirmation.
Previously, there was speculation about PM Oli visiting India before attending the 6th BIMSTEC Summit in Bangkok, Thailand. However, the trip was not confirmed. During that summit, Oli and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi had a bilateral meeting at the Mandarin Oriental Hotel in Bangkok, where they reportedly discussed the visit based on mutually agreeable dates, but the plan did not move forward.
Since his appointment as Prime Minister on July 15, 2024 (31 Asar 2081 BS), Oli has expressed continued interest in visiting India. However, the Indian side showed limited interest, leading to the delay in the visit. PM Oli previously made an official trip to China from December 2 to 14, 2024 (17–29 Mangsir 2081 BS). Upon returning, he mentioned plans to visit India, but that also failed to proceed.
Oli and Modi last met on April 4, 2025 (22 Chaitra 2081 BS), during the BIMSTEC Summit in Bangkok. In that one-on-one meeting, PM Modi reportedly invited PM Oli to visit India. Upon his return, PM Oli reiterated his intention to make the visit, but further developments remained stagnant.
