A total of 30,000 tons of urea fertilizer procured through the Government-to-Government (G2G) process with India has arrived at Kolkata Port, India. The fertilizer, targeted for Nepal’s monsoon paddy planting season, is expected to reach Birgunj customs yard within a week, according to the Agricultural Inputs Company Limited, Madhesh Provincial Office.
Chief Durgaprasad Pandey of the Birgunj office confirmed that the packing process is currently ongoing at Kolkata. “If packing is completed on time, the fertilizer will enter Nepal within this week,” he said. “The railway racks transporting the fertilizer will reach Birgunj within three days.”
The shipment is being handled by Aditya Birla Group, which was awarded the contract by the Government of India. This marks part of the larger consignment secured via bilateral agreement.
Earlier, the second railway rack under this 30,000-ton consignment arrived at the Sirsiya Dry Port in Birgunj on Wednesday. “The first rack had reached Raxaul,” added Pandey. “Each rack usually carries around 2,500 tons of urea.”
Out of the total 30,000 tons ordered, only 16,000 tons will arrive in this initial phase, he confirmed.
The supplier for both Agricultural Inputs Company and Salt Trading Corporation’s 30,000-ton urea each is Sun International. The company reportedly brought only 35,000 tons of urea on the first ship from Qatar, which is being shared equally — 16,000 tons for each institution.
The remaining fertilizer from this consignment will be delivered via a second vessel. From the current batch of 16,000 tons, the Birgunj office will receive 6,700 tons, while the rest will be allocated to the Bhairahawa and Biratnagar regional offices.
Pandey expressed optimism about meeting the upcoming seasonal demand. “With continuous fertilizer arrivals and confirmation of G2G shipments, we are hopeful that this year’s urea demand for monsoon paddy will be fulfilled,” he added.
