Nepali Congress Chair Sher Bahadur Deuba has announced his plans to retire from active politics. Speaking at the condolence program for democratic movement fighter Gauri Devi Pradhan, Deuba expressed his commitment to uniting the party before stepping down.
Deuba pointed out a persistent issue within the party—internal rivalries that prevent it from winning an outright majority. “Only one gets the ticket, and those who don’t start to lose faith. This is the disease within our party. If we unite, Nepali Congress can secure a majority on its own,” Deuba said. “I am about to retire. But my wish is to make this party united.”
He also praised the inclusive proportional representation system enshrined in the constitution. Deuba acknowledged the difficulty for any single party to gain a clear majority under this system, making coalition-building a necessity. “The proportional inclusive system with representation from all ethnic groups is good. But it is hard for any party to win alone,” he said. “Since no party can get a majority alone, we have to join hands with some party. Yesterday, we allied with the Maoists; today, with UML. If we unite, we can win the majority alone.”
Deuba recalled Shyam Krishna Pradhan and his wife Gauri Devi Pradhan as trusted confidants of BP Koirala. BP used to stay at their home and devise political strategies. Remembering his many visits to BP, Deuba highlighted the Pradhan family’s significant contribution to the party and democratic struggle.
Gauri Devi Pradhan, who had been active in the Congress and democratic movement since 1949 (2006 BS), passed away last Saturday.
