Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli expressed concern after seeing lawmakers from the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP) wearing black clothing and blue ribbons in Parliament on Thursday.
Just before the parliamentary session began, PM Oli noticed the symbolic attire of RSP members and inquired about it. According to MP Manish Jha, RSP’s Deputy Parliamentary Party Leader Biraj Bhakta Shrestha informed the Prime Minister that the dress code was a symbolic protest against human trafficking.
“The blue ribbon is a global symbol against human trafficking,” said MP Jha. “We’ve worn it along with black clothing to express our protest. This is not a one-day act — we’ve been protesting continuously for the last 22 days.”
Jha further stated that RSP lawmakers had demonstrated their stance in around 15 different parliamentary sessions during this period. “Despite our ongoing protest, we hadn’t received any official statement from the government. Today, we finally had a chance to meet the Prime Minister inside Parliament, and he asked us about our attire. We explained the symbolism, and he extended his best wishes,” Jha added.
The RSP emphasized that their choice of black clothing reflected the government’s indifference toward their 22-day-long protest. They said it was unfortunate that the government remained silent even as lawmakers continuously raised a serious issue like human trafficking.
