Over 62% Students Pass SEE 2081; Sharp Rise in GPA 4 Scorers

A total of 61.81% of students have passed the Secondary Education Examination (SEE) 2081, according to the results published on Friday evening by the National Examination Board (NEB), Office of the Controller of Examinations, Grade 10.

Out of 438,896 regular examinees, 271,299 students have qualified for admission to Grade 11 this year. This year’s pass percentage shows a significant increase of 13.94 percentage points compared to last year’s 47.87%.

GPA 4 Toppers Reach 971

The number of students achieving a perfect 4.0 GPA has dramatically increased. This year, 971 students secured GPA 4, a significant rise from just 186 last year. Kathmandu alone contributed 410 GPA 4 scorers, up from 94 in the previous year.

Reactions and Doubts Over the Surge

NEB Chairperson Mahashram Sharma attributed the improvement to enhanced local-level educational management following the decentralization of education authority. Former Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli also expressed satisfaction on social media, stating that the collective efforts to improve educational outcomes have paid off.

However, education expert Bidhyanath Koirala expressed skepticism about the sudden improvement. “Such a drastic jump from 48% to 62% can’t solely be credited to better teaching,” he said. “Either students’ capacity was genuinely improved, or grace marks were generously awarded.”

He questioned whether school closures and political expectations may have influenced the outcome, adding, “There’s no clear evidence that quality learning alone led to this rise. The government must focus on skill development for students who struggle academically.”

GPA Breakdown: Most Students Fall in Mid-Range

  • GPA 3.60 to 4.00: 48,177 students
  • GPA 3.20 to 3.59: 81,385 students
  • GPA 2.80 to 3.19: 89,124 students
  • GPA 2.40 to 2.79: 48,479 students
  • GPA 2.00 to 2.39: 4,126 students
  • GPA 1.60 to 1.99: 8 students only

The majority of students fell within the mid-range GPA bracket.

Subject-Wise Failures Remain High

As in previous years, Mathematics, Science, English, and Social Studies had the highest number of non-graded (fail) students:

  • Mathematics: 128,215 students
  • English: 80,672 students
  • Science and Technology: 79,271 students
  • Social Studies: 53,186 students
  • Nepali: 54,735 students
  • Economics: 42,150 students
  • Optional Mathematics: 18,222 students

A total of 126 students had their results canceled due to examination violations.

The ongoing shortage of qualified teachers for core subjects in public schools remains a critical concern. Notably, no permanent teaching positions have been added in community schools since 2000 (2057 B.S.).

Rechecking and Supplementary Exam Options Available

To pass, students must score at least 35% in theoretical and 40% in internal evaluations per subject. Those dissatisfied with their results can apply online for re-totaling or answer sheet review, said Exam Controller Ganesh Bhattarai.

A supplementary exam for students who failed will be held from August 13, 2025 (29th Shrawan 2082). This year’s SEE exams were conducted from March 20 to April 1, 2025 (7th–19th Chaitra 2081).
