339,000 people receive NOC over a four-year period

There are now more Nepali students studying overseas. Only children from wealthy families traveled overseas for higher education a few decades ago, but in more recent years, students from regular homes have begun to pursue the same objective.

According to Ramesh Ghimire, head of the Ministry of Education, Science, and Technology’s “No Objection Certificate (NOC)” branch, students used to travel outside to study disciplines that were not offered in Nepal. Currently, though, students are traveling overseas to study topics that are offered in Nepal.

Nepali students have been granted NOCs to study in 111 countries over the past four years. A total of 338,974 pupils received NOCs during this time. According to Ramesh Ghimire, students who receive NOCs for further study primarily do so in order to pursue chances overseas.

The branch’s data indicates that the most NOCs were issued during the four-year period in fiscal year 2023–2024. 112,593 students were granted NOCs to study in 111 different countries during that year. There has been an increase in the number of students studying abroad during the last four years, according to the data.

Between July 16 and January 28, 46,785 pupils received NOCs. By the end of the current fiscal year, Ghimire predicts that this figure will surpass the amount from the previous year. “Approximately 400 students receive NOCs every day on average,” Ghimire stated.

Ghimire stated, “The trend of students wishing to travel overseas is continuously growing, even though not all students who receive NOCs do so. The fact that students are traveling overseas to study topics that are offered in Nepal is startling.

“The ministry has registered international colleges that are already delivering their education here,” he continued, “but it is alarming that more and more Nepali students are choosing to study abroad. Students who have merely finished grade 12 are in possession of both an international visa and a certificate of educational qualification. This demonstrates how young students are looking for possibilities overseas in addition to their studies.

Japan, Canada, Australia, the United States, the United Kingdom, and South Korea were the top travel destinations for students in the fiscal year 2023–2024, according to the branch’s data. 34,731 of the 112,593 students who were granted NOCs during this time are traveling to Japan. Following Japan are Canada (15,982), Australia (14,372), the United Kingdom (13,339), the United States (11,261), and South Korea (6,889).

In a similar vein, authorities issued 102,610 NOCs in fiscal year 2022–2023. 28,079 of them were for students who wanted to study in Australia.

Likewise, 20,810 students received NOCs to study in Canada during that year. In addition, the United States received NOCs for 4,098 students, the United Kingdom for 10,280, and Japan for 21,641.

28,239 students were granted NOCs to study overseas for the fiscal year 2020–21. 8,577 students, the largest number among them, were granted NOCs for Japan. Furthermore, 2,470 pupils received NOCs for the United Kingdom, 2,468 for Canada, 1,266 for the United States, and 4,669 for Australia.

During fiscal year 2021–2022, 95,532 NOCs were issued by the government. 50,300 students received NOCs to study in Australia during that year. Following Australia, Japan got NOCs for 16,695 students, Canada for 5,268 students, the United States for 6,381 students, the United Kingdom for 5,151 students, and South Korea for 1,251 students.

“Students studying management, IT, medical sciences, humanities, law, nursing, and engineering make up the majority of those receiving NOCs,” Ghimire stated. The administration should now look into how many students who studied overseas were able to find employment, how many came back to Nepal, and how many remained overseas. Only wealthy people used to pursue further education overseas, but these days, even those from less wealthy families are selling their homes to pursue possibilities elsewhere. Examining whether they discovered opportunities is crucial.
