Today we observe Martyrs' Day

In remembrance of individuals who gave their lives during various historical times to build and restore democracy and freedom, Martyrs’ Day is being commemorated nationwide today with a variety of events.

Since 2007 BS, March 16 has been the annual date for Martyrs’ Day celebrations. But even though the martyrs are remembered every year, there have been complaints about the insufficient efforts made to realize their dreams. In the meantime, responsible authorities’ promises to fulfill the martyrs’ aspirations are still included in official programs on this day.

From March 10 to 16, Martyrs’ Week is commemorated with a variety of activities. The Martyrs’ Day celebration has been held annually on Magh 16 by the Kathmandu Municipality since 2012 BS.

On Magh 10, 1997 BS, the Rana rulers executed Shukraraj Shastri, one of four famous martyrs, at Pachali in Teku, Kathmandu. Likewise, Gangalal Shrestha and Dasharath Chand were shot dead in Shobha Bhagwati on Magh 15, while Dharma Bhakta Mathema was executed at Siphal on Magh 13.

A morning rally has been planned from Shantibatika, Ratnapark, to the Martyrs’ Memorial in Lainchaur on Wednesday in honor of Martyrs’ Day. The Prime Minister, ministers, senior government officials, people’s representatives, security forces, a marching band, and parade units will all participate in the program, which will end with a memorial service honoring both known and unknown martyrs.

Similarly, an event at the National Martyrs’ Memorial in Gokarneshwar will be organized to honor the martyrs from Lakhan Thapa to those who gave their lives in recent freedom efforts. Following a Cabinet resolution on Jestha 11, 2064 BS, this program was launched. According to Committee Chairman Sudarshan Sigdel, Forest and Environment Minister Ain Bahadur Shahi will be the main guest at the event, which is being planned by the National Martyrs and Peace Park Civil Service (memorial) Yagyadol (Jagdol) Community Forest Tourism Promotion and Garden Management Committee.

Prior to 2063 BS, Martyrs’ Day was celebrated by the government with special events held at the Martyrs’ Gate. While few organizations still mark the day at the Martyrs’ Gate, the primary remembrance event in recent years has taken place at the Martyrs’ Memorial in Lainchaur.

It was recently reported that Narayanhiti Palace Museum’s Republic Memorial would house a martyrs’ memorial site. After taking the oath of office, the president, vice president, prime minister, ministers, and other high-ranking officials will gather at the memorial to honor the martyrs. Furthermore, the location will offer a specific space where international dignitaries can visit and lay wreaths in remembrance of those who gave their lives to support freedom.
