Although the Tribhuvan International Airport (TIA) taxiway expansion is halfway done, the relevant authorities now assert that other development projects cannot be finished on schedule even though the taxiway expansion will be finished by the deadline.

Dipendra Shrestha, the Director of CAAN’s Air Transport Capacity Enhancement Project, stated that the Civil Aviation Authority of Nepal (CAAN) has set a deadline of March 31 for the completion of the taxiway expansion development.

He stated, “About half of the construction work in the taxiway expansion, including the sub-base course, drainage, taxiway culvert, and installation of the airfield ground light duct, has been finished. The remaining work is the laying of the asphalt treated base and the asphalt concrete surface.” The taxiway expansion project, which is being built approximately 75 meters away on either side of the runway’s central section, can be finished by the deadline of March 31.

The airport currently features an international apron and taxiway in the north-south direction, a hangar in the east, and a parallel taxiway in the southwest. At a cost of Rs 7.25 billion, the CAAN is building seven taxiways that link to the runway.

The remaining building projects may not be finished on time, even if the work to expand the taxiways appears to be proceeding according to the planned timeline. According to CAAN officials, even after the taxiway expansion is finished, the airport may remain closed for additional construction.

Gyanendra Bhul, the CAAN’s information officer, told Republica that airline operators had already been notified that the airport will be closed six hours a day, seven days a week, starting on March 31.

“To ensure that flights are not impacted, we will permit flights during the standard 18-hour pre-construction operation period. The remaining construction work will be completed at night in accordance with the current schedule,” he stated. “The extension of the hangar area would remain unfinished by March 31 and would be one of several construction projects that would continue even after the taxiway expansion is finished.”

To allow for the installation of new infrastructure, Nepal’s busiest airport, TIA, has been closed for extended periods of time at night. Since construction started on November 8, the airport, which formerly operated for 18 hours under normal conditions, has only been open for 14 hours (8 am to 10 pm). To accommodate additional planes and ease passenger flow at the airport, CAAN extended its operating hours by two hours (7 am to 11 pm) on February 2. At that time, officials asserted that more than 60% of the airport’s building projects were finished.

Information Officer Bhul informed Republica that once the taxiway expansion construction is finished, the airport would begin operating flights at its usual 18-hour hours (6 am to 12 pm) on April 1.
