Lamichhane made an appearance in court on Wednesday to testify in the case of cooperation fraud. After his detention hearing was unable to end that same day, the court turned him over to the police on Wednesday. Lamichhane is only facing a fraud charge in the Chitwan District Court, despite organized crime cases being filed against him in the districts of Kaski, Kathmandu, and Rupandehi.

Lamichhane, 15 other people, and six organizations were charged by the District Government Attorney’s Office (DGAO) in Chitwan with embezzling and stealing the cooperative’s funds on February 4. The accused stole a total of Rs 389.79 million from Sahara Cooperative, according to an investigation report from the District Police Office in Chitwan.

On October 18, Lamichhane was arrested from the party’s Kathmandu headquarters for embezzling Suryadarshan Cooperative funding. He was charged with organized crime, cooperative fraud, and money laundering in the first of many cases brought before the Kaski District Court after being placed under detention in judicial custody for eighty-four days. He was accused of participating in the misappropriation of Rs 33.7 million from the cooperative by the District Government Attorney’s Office, Kaski, in a case filed in the District Court on December 22. On January 9, the District Court granted him release on a Rs 6.5 million bond.

Lamichhane was one of 39 individuals charged on January 5 with defrauding depositors of Rs 1.19 billion at the Kathmandu-based Swarnalaxmi Cooperative. According to the DGAO, Kathmandu, funds had even been stolen from the cooperative to buy a car under Lamichhane’s name. On January 15, the district court issued a judgment releasing Lamichhane on Rs 6 million bail.

Following Kathmandu, on January 19, Lamichhane and 21 other people were charged with embezzling Supreme Cooperative funds in Rupandehi, with a fraud claim of Rs 555.9 million. According to Rupandehi, the DGAO, Lamcihhane was the only one who embezzled Rs 20 million.

The court granted his freedom on January 26 in exchange for Rs 10 million in bail.
